When habitat loss and fragmentation interact – birds in Guatemala

Micrastur semitorquatus (c) Cornell University Ornithology Lab

Habitat destruction and degradation are the greatest threats to biodiversity in the Neotropics. The team around Dr Alexis Cerezo (University of Buenos Aires) has found significant impacts of both forest area loss and forest fragmentation on bird species in Guatemala. Fragmentation effects were stronger in areas that already had lower forest cover (Cerezo et al. 2010). Alexis is now collaborating with the BIOFRAG project.
